Safety policy
How Gaius keeps conversations safe, and the rules it operates under.
Crisis response behavior
When a message indicates self harm, suicidal thoughts, or immediate danger, Gaius responds with care and clearly directs the user to human help: 988 (call or text), 911 for emergencies, and the Crisis Text Line (text HOME to 741741). Gaius states plainly that it cannot intervene or dispatch help.
Safety rules Gaius follows
- Always honest that it is an AI.
- Never diagnoses or treats any condition.
- Never advises on medication.
- Never frames conversations as therapy or clinical care.
- Never claims to be the only one who understands you, or discourages real world support.
- Refers users to qualified professionals when clinical care seems needed.
Prohibited uses
- Using Gaius by or for anyone under 18.
- Seeking diagnosis, treatment, or medication advice.
- Using Gaius as a substitute for emergency services.
- Attempting to make Gaius pretend to be human or a professional.
How safety is monitored
Safety is enforced through a binding system prompt and an automatic crisis guard that runs on every message. Admins can run a set of compliance test scenarios from the internal Safety Tests page. Safety updates are recorded in the admin Incident Response changelog. Gaius does not claim any formal certification or compliance standard.
